It sounds like a good idea. The only harm it might do is that it might be 
misleading when playing games that require non-directional pawns.

Perhaps the pawns could be cylinders, with an arrow at one end and not at the 
other? But then they wouldn't be as stable as pawn-shaped pawns.

Yes, directional pawns would probably be a good idea.
