RE: [piecepack] Re: Piecepack Pyramids
I think that the essential and unique characteristic of the pyramids is the
non-uniform size. Otherwise, as Tom says, they duplicate the coins in
functionality.
I'm still not sure that I agree with the idea of making the suit visible
form only one side however. While I can see the advantage of this for some
game designs, there is a significant disadvantage in many games if one of
more of the players can't tell what the suit is of some of the pyramids. I
suspect the potential size of the latter category of games may be larger
than that of the former. One variation on the pyramid design is to color the
tips (say the top 1/8") the same color as the suit icon. This retains the
advantage of the suit icon as an orientation indicator and also could
support the hiding of suit when the pyramids are stacked, but at the same
time the suit of an exposed pyramid will be clear from any seating position
around the board.
Let me be clear however that the pyramids as they are are really nice and
Tom deserves praise for taking the time to actually do the work. I have
found that heavy photographic paper makes attractive, sturdy pyramids. I use
69LB glossy photographic paper designed for ink jet printers, and then glue
them together using Duco cement (don't forget to pre-coat the surfaces).
This works very well on all printers I've tried except HP printers which
can't seem to handle the heavy paper. -----Original Message-----

Which makes me realize: Since they're different sizes, you can't have the
suits known and the values hidden. So wouldn't they be more piecepack-like
if they were all the same size, and instead of letters, they had the
normal six values? What was the reasoning for doing it the way it is now?
At one point when they were being created I thought about making them
one size with the suit on one side and the value on the other, but then it
was pointed out to me that were just duplicating the coins. I really didn't
think we needed pyramid shaped coins so I went back to the oringinal idea of
different sizes.
