I hope it turns out to be reasonable...

And using your offsetting pseudo-hex thought I have created the 
Piecepack Subway variant Paris (complete with Notre Dame 
island in the middle of the River Seine) for inclusion in the next 
version of the game.  Currently working on a representation of 
Amsterdam...
