Since the set you describe wouldn't use very many of the available
characters, may I also suggest rotated versions of the symbols, an
open circle with a pip, a blank square, a square with a grid, and
open spaces 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 and the same width as the squares. A good
public domain piecepack font would be a godsend for people designing
rulesets. I wish I had a font forge program to do it.
