I used sheets of foam.
While plastic/wood many times look nicer, the white foam squares were
inexpensive (I think it was three or four sheets for a buck, which made 6
squares each, so I guess it would be about 18-24 squares for a buck.) They
look reasonably nice, are light-weight, and very affordable to replace if
something happens to one.
Just an idea.

Had the same problem so I went plastic. See the picture in the photo
section or my wiki page. It's a little more expensive but looks really
good.
