Hi Susan,
Firstly, I strongly recommend Abstract Games Magazine. It is of
the highest quality, both construction-wise and content-wise. The
ratio of content to advertising is also high, and the advertising is
typically tasteful and sometimes useful.
Regarding 4x4 games, my favorites are Quarto, Plateau, and two of
my own; Catalyst and Starplex (both of which utilize Ice House
pyramids on a 4x4 board). All four of these games have respectable
depth, even though they are played on small boards. The L-Game is
also interesting if you enjoy lateral thinking games. A friend, Herb
Acree, has a file containing 83 4x4 games. If you would like a link
