I had the same question during testing. The official word I got back
from the authors is that *all* of the coins slink away in a tie.
However, this can prolong the game, so I suggested a couple of
alternatives in my final report. Letting the fewest number of coins
break ties allows cooler kids to get to the top anyway, and seems to
fit the theme. (The 5 would advance in your example.) But letting the
greatest number of coins break ties makes for an interesting game
where a larger group of less cool kids mutiny against the cool kids.
(The 3 would advance in your example.) This allows for interesting
come-from-behind wins, and is the way I usually play these days, but I
think any of the three would be acceptable.
