Mark's interpretation is correct. The reason the rule
is there is you're not allowed to make a 180 degree
turn, whether to run away or give chase. You can,
however, make one 90 degree turn at any time during
the move. You don't have to sail; moving zero spaces
(like dropping sail) is allowed. And of course you may
also go one space in the direction the wind blows, no
matter what direction you're facing.
If you wanted to, I suppose you *could* play with your
pirate ship number side up as with other ships, but I
find it much easier to remember which ship is mine if
I play with the moon side up. If you use the space at
the bottom of the play mat to store the unused ships,
it's also easy to figure out the size of your ship
(it's the unoccupied circle).
