Most memory techniques have their basis in the process of emoting material. This is essentially refering to the "linking method" explained above. The Major system, method of loci, semcubed etc. are all using a system of visualization that convinces the lower limbic brain that the material is important and should be remembered.Understanding this mechanism better enables one to manipulate it. There is both an anatomical and evolutionary basis for this based on Paul Macleans triune model of the brain. (See wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_d._macLean ) The theory is that the three regions of the brain developed during different eras and under different stressors. These three regions are: * R-complex - this is essentially the reptile brain. It is dogmatic and its responses are predictable, although its essential for regulation of autonomic responses and metabolic processes. * Limbic - This is also called the mammalian brain. The root of all emotions, but for us even more importantly it contains the amygdala which is the long term memory forming component. According to this model, any strong emotional state indicates that the organism has found something that it should remember such as Food, Danger, Novelty, Sexuality, etc. * Neocortex - This is the actual thinking brain. Although information is cognitively processed here, the Neocortex can only influence memory retention by either repitition, or through encoding in a way that the Limbic is receptive (i.e. linking). For linking, this understanding is important because all inputs (sight, sound, touch, etc.) are first routed through the neocortex, and then to the Limbic. The Limbic has the final say as to what will or will not be remembered. The way this understanding can be applied is as follows: * Break down any conceptual or abstract words by syllable into concrete icons before pegging or linking * Attach each syllable and seperate word using some kind of action that should elicit an emotion in a person * Increase mental fidelity of your visualization until one has an actual emotional response Now how does this differ from linking as explained before? The difference is the emphasis on emotion. The point of Limbic Stimulation is that any emotional state will initiate the making of a memory. If anyone is interested there is a free MP3 available called "triune" on Mayhem Radio. ( http://mayhemii.libsyn.com/ )that explains this to a much greater degree. - Cassock
