Could the distinction be a matter of winability?
puzzle - invariably winnable every time; example = peg solitaire
patience - winability pre-determined [though usually unknown to
player and can change through player action]; examples = Klondike,
Tula
game - winability not pre-determined; examples = Lord of the Rings,
One Man: Thrag!
